Tips to Organize Your Garage This Spring

Spring cleaning is the time to give your home a thorough scrub down. But one area that's often overlooked is the garage. While this isn't the room you and your family spend most -- if any -- time in, it's important to give the garage the attention it deserves. After all, this is where you store some of your most expensive belongings, i.e. tools, seasonal decorations and sporting and camping gear. Neglecting the garage invites rodents and insects, things that will make themselves at home in your tool box, rolled up sleeping bags and crates of stuff.

But cleaning and organizing the garage doesn't have to be overwhelming. With a solid plan of action, you can tackle this project with confidence.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves!

Invest in Proper Cleaning Supplies and Equipment

Investing in proper cleaning supplies and equipment is imperative before you begin a deep cleaning of your garage area. Stock up on paper towels, rags and household cleaners. Purchase heavy-duty rubber working gloves or latex gloves. Use a face mask with filters to avoid breathing in dirt and dust. Wear outdated or old clothing that you won't mind getting dirty.

Air Out Your Garage

As the weather shifts and becomes more comfortable, air out your garage. Open any windows and entrances of your garage to eliminate stale, musty, or unpleasant odors. If your garage has been kept shut and free from airflow throughout most of the winter, airing it out is a way to refresh the space before you begin working in it.

Storage Item Solutions

Some of the most common ways to store items in a garage space include:

Stackable Totes: Stackable totes (with lids) are optimal to help save space while providing you with more vertical storage in your garage. Use stackable totes to keep seasonal items, clothing, and home decor sets that you are not currently using in place. Label your totes for easy access.

Racks: Use metal rack systems to store additional boxes, totes, and personal belongings without taking up all of the space in your garage.

Shelves: Consider installing shelving units for more vertical space and storage. Shelves help declutter the floor of your garage, providing more space to work in.

Tool Racks and Shelves: Wall racks designed for tools are extremely beneficial, especially if you do not currently have a table designated for tools. Using a rack to display all of your tools is also extremely efficient, saving time whenever you are in need of a specific tool for a project or repair.

Storage unit: If your garage is a max capacity, consider renting a storage unit. They're secure, reasonably affordable and some are temperature controlled to help preserve your most valuable items

Deep Cleaning Your Belongings

When conducting a thorough spring cleaning of your garage it is important to move, dust, and wipe down all of the belongings that are visible in the space. Even if you do not use items frequently, take the time to deep clean them to prevent additional buildup which may render them useless or damaged if left alone for too long.

Sell Your Unwanted Items

Hosting a garage sale or listing items and furniture you no longer want or need is another way to declutter the space in your home while earning a bit of cash on the side. Once you begin decluttering and cleaning your garage, create separate bins and boxes of items you want to list for sale or donate to charity.

Don't Forget to Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up

Speaking of things we neglect during spring cleaning, now is the perfect time to schedule an HVAC tune-up with Dowd Mechanical Heating & Air Conditioning. Warmer temperatures are around the corner and you'll want to be sure your air conditioner is up to the task of keeping your home comfortable all summer long.
