Company FAQs

No matter how well made a piece of equipment is or who manufactures it, its comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency are ultimately in the hands of the company doing the installation. Do you have any client testimonials I can read?

Do you carry all the latest heating and cooling equipment—and are you properly trained and certified to install or repair this equipment?

Yes! Although we are a certified Trane dealer, we also have access to any other equipment manufacturers you already have or may be interested in—and all of our HVAC technicians are fully trained and qualified to handle the most current equipment.

Do you provide all warranties and guarantees in writing?

All of our guarantees are written and honored with promptness and courtesy.

Do you mind answering questions?

There is no such thing as a dumb question. It is our job to help you find out what you need to know!

Are you fully staffed?

Dowd Mechanical, Heating & Air Conditioning maintains a fleet of vehicles fully stocked for the jobs for which they are designated, and our name, logo, phone number, and address are prominently displayed on all of our vehicles. Do you provide a written proposal?

Of course. Our written proposal will clearly define the equipment to be used, the work to be performed, and the agreed upon price. We can also usually offer you a choice of equipment with “good,” “better,” and “best” options.

Why aren’t you as cheap as my brother-in-law, who does HVAC equipment on the side?

Don’t be misled to believe that “low price = best value.” When buying any HVAC component or service, the lowest price is virtually never the best value. And while your brother-in-law may be a good guy, a part-time contractor is never going to be able to provide you with the service and quality that a full-time professional employed by a company with the experience and reputation of Dowd Heating and Air Conditioning could.

Do you service after the sale?

Our business is built on getting and keeping customers by providing premium service at a fair and reasonable price. We are not completely comfortable until you are.

Can you provide a complete service history at the touch of a button?

All of our services are completely computerized, providing a complete record of every detail including the make and model of equipment we install, date of installation, warranty registration information, and the nature of every call made.

Heating & Cooling FAQs

What does “SEER” mean?

You’ve probably seen SEER labels on every air conditioner being sold in the last couple of years, but what does “SEER” mean, exactly? SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is a mathematically determined ratio measuring the amount of energy your AC uses to do its job—the higher the SEER, the higher the energy efficiency.

How do I fix a frozen air conditioner?

Sometimes fixing your frozen air conditioner is as easy as turning up the temperature on your thermostat, but other times, the answer to “how do I fix a frozen air conditioner?” can be more complicated than it seems. The first thing you should do when your AC is frozen is shut it down. Turn the whole system off, lay down some towels, and wait for everything to defrost—only then can you start diagnosing and fixing the problem.

How often should I replace my HVAC air filters?

Your air filters should be replaced every one to three months depending on usage. This is extremely important to the performance of your heating and air conditioning systems and your indoor air quality.

How does an air conditioner work?

Your air conditioner makes the air in your home cooler by removing heat from the indoor air and transferring that heat to the outdoor air.

Heat is extracted from your home by passing the indoor air across a refrigerant coil in the indoor unit. Refrigerant lines then carry the heat to the outdoor unit, where it is released into the outside air. The cooling cycle continues until the indoor temperature reaches the thermostat setting.

I’ve been seeing the terms SEER, AFUE and HSPF a lot lately—what do they mean?

These are all measurements of the energy efficiency of your HVAC equipment—and the higher the number, the better!

  • SEER – Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
  • AFUE – Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency
  • HSPF – Heating Seasonal Performance Factor

How often should I have my HVAC equipment serviced?

If you want to ensure optimal performance of your heating and cooling equipment, you have to have it serviced annually. Your heating equipment should be serviced at the end of the summer or the beginning of fall (the start of the heating season), and your cooling equipment should be serviced at the end of the winter or the beginning of the spring (the start of the cooling season).
