Common AC Problems

Loud noise – When your AC is making loud noises while running, it is usually caused by the fan or other internal components. Unless you have an expert knowledge of the inner-workings of your HVAC equipment, fixing this common AC problem is best left to the professionals.

Blocked air flow – There are a couple reasons why you could have blocked air flow in your AC. The first (and most likely culprit) is the air filter. Your filter should be changed every 1 – 3 months, depending on how often you’re running your AC—and when the filter is clogged and dirty, it prohibits air flow through your home. Another way you could be creating a reduced air flow is by blocking the registers or vents. This is a pretty easy fix, though! Just walk around the house and make sure nothing is blocking the air flow, such as rugs or furniture.

Internal leakage – If your AC is leaking, then there is most likely a problem with your condensate pan. However, it could be something more serious such as a refrigerant leak! Your best bet is to contact a professional AC repairman and get a diagnosis.

Inefficient cooling – There are a lot of reasons why your air conditioner could be providing inefficient or down-right unacceptable cooling, including all of the issues above and:

  • Your programmable thermostat is broken or malfunctioning
  • You have an unbalanced refrigerant charge
  • You have leaky or poorly sized ductwork
  • Your AC is old and outdated

Since there are so many possible causes to this problem, it’s best to have an expert come out and take a look.
